The more polite and cordial you are to them when they infringe on your space, the more they will take advantage, often just for the sake of it. I have tried to take the "high road" approach in situations like yours; it just dosent work with these arrogant fucks. May I suggest next time approaching with a FIRM and ASSERTIVE yowl of 'Git Off My Property, now! Look them right in the eye when you do this, and of course if you have a barking, sputtering, snapping dog alongside you it always helps. You may even want to play up some mental instability and scare them off this way. The polite route just won't cut it anymore.
